Featured Image - Fishing Boats, Dunwich Beach, Suffolk

The old fishing boats with their flags on Dunwich beach make a really strong black and white statement. Originally shot in colour, I have come to like it far better in black and white. Lightroom does a great job of black and white conversion and I am re-looking at many of my images to find the good black and white versions.

Featured Image - Strata Clear Island, Southern Ireland

The striking vertical strata caught my eye as we sailed along the south coast of Ireland. The coast of Southern Ireland is a wild and rocky place and one of the best sailing areas in the British Isles. Taken handheld with a Canon 10D and a 300mm IS lens.

Featured Image - Reflections Loch Ba Rannoch Moor

The reflections here are in ice not water. Taken at dusk at Loch Ba on the wild and remote Rannoch Moor in Glencoe. The shot was taken at dusk when the somewhat flat light improved just enough to light up the frozen river Ba.

Featured Image - Scottish Lichen

There is always a shot to be had, no matter what the lighting conditions.
I found this colourful boulder and was drawn to the vivid oranges and yellows. The lichen on a rock like this can take thousands of years to form and what a display once it has!

Featured Image - Cornish Liferaft Rescue

I grabbed this shot from the deck of a boat as we were sailing past the entrance to the Helford River in Cornwall.
For me the drama in the shot comes from the large ship which appears to be steaming towards the main activity of the scene. Try covering up the ship with your finger and see the the difference without it. It's the ship which makes the shot in my view.

Featured Image - Waterside Boulders - The Upper River Dart

This image was taken a a location called New Bridge in the upper Dart valley near Dartmeet. The river was very full and there were just enough leaves left to provide late winter colour.

Featured Image - The Scoop - Glen Etive

The image below was captured halfway down the remote Glen Etive. The Glen runs for about 18 km before reaching the sea via Loch Etive.
The Scoop descends from the slopes of Ben Starav and cascades across the local pink granite. It's a great location for capturing the evening light as it paints bands of warm purple and orange across the floor of the Glen.

The shot below was taken using an Olympus OM4Ti using scanned Fuji Provia 100 slide film.

Featured Image - Sunlit Pine, Torridon, Scotland

The Torridon Mountains is region of the Highlands of Scotland. This image was taken in a small caledonian pine forest on the shore of Loch Maree. Lovely light just picked out the small tree as I waited.

High Barrow, Dartmoor - The Featured Image

There is something about the light which appears over Dartmoor on a cold morning in winter. This shot was taken just after a shower of rain. The Sun broke through just long enough for me to grab handheld. Dartmoor in the south west of England is a contrasting landscape of wild granite tors surrounded by ancient oak woodlands. I thoroughly recommend it as a photographic location.

Featured Image - The River Dart in Flood

The River Dart in flood. This image was taken at a place called New Bridge in Dartmoor.
I had to get my feet wet but the I think the effect was worth it. Another shot taken from the river bank rather than in the full force of the stream just did not do justice to the fallen tree. This and other images of Dartmoor and Devon can be seen in the The Dart in Autumn Portfolio

Featured Image - Pin Mill, Suffolk UK

Pin Mill in Suffolk is situated a few miles east of the town of Ipswich. It lies on the River Orwell and is well known for it's Thames Barges. The River Orwell is unusual for an East Coast river in that it has has some stunning woodland areas. Mud flats are more normal in this area of England.

The two figures in the shot are real and I think add a strong focal point. I have included it in my collection of East Coast Seascapes as it was taken from the deck of a boat on our way down river.

The Featured Image - Southwold, Suffolk

Taken at Southwold in Suffolk, UK on a stormy day in Autumn. The strong easterly wind was blowing off the North Sea. Southwold harbour is very narrow producing large waves which smash against the piers.

We were waiting for the weather to improve having sailed to Southwold the previous day.
