Lightroom Tip - Use the Full Quick Develop Tools

When you are working in the Library Module using quick develop, make sure you toggle the little black triangles on the right hand side of the Quick Develop box.
The default mode only shows you Tone Control, Exposure, Clarity and Vibrance. See the first box below.

Lightroon Quick Develop Default

Click the little black triangle, next to the Tone Control item, and the rest of the settings will appear for you to be able to quickly modify an image whilst staying in the Library Module.

Lightroon Quick Develop full

Try clicking the other triangles and options will appear for additional white balance and preset settings.

This is a somewhat obvious Tip but I had forgotten that I could access these adjustments from the Library Module.
Let me know if this tip helps you.

Lightroom 1.3 Leopard Issues Remain

Lightroom 1.3 still has issues for Leopard users, and not just with printing, according to the Lightroom Journal.

Issues are with

  • Timemachine

  • Print Module crashing the application

  • Image import from media

  • Metadata import

Lightroom 1.3 Available from the Adobe site

Lightroom 1.3 is available from the Adobe site.

I recommend you use the 'Try' option rather than the update as for now the update link takes you to a 1.1 update!

The update fixes the following:

  • New camera file formats

  • Leopard Printing - also compatibilty with Leopard 10.5.1

  • Printing with the native resolution option enabled no longer sets the wrong dimension for portrait oriented images

  • Import dialog now offers the option to render 1:1 previews as part of the import process

  • Enhanced export dialog layout

  • A Lightroom Preview Export SDK for developers to create and distribute Export Plug-ins

Camera Raw 4.3 has also been released.

I won't go into any detail as there is an excellent review at Ian Lyons Computer Darkroom site

Lightroom Tip - Using Custom Text in Slideshows

In the Slideshow Module press 'T' to bring up the Toolbar and select the 'ABC' button. This will allow you to enter a variety of text information which can be displayed as the slideshow plays. Depending on your choices you can display a custom text string about you, or your company, image numbering, image name or a selection EXIF or IPTC data.

Lightroom Slideshow Toolbar

The Edit selection from the drop-down dialog box allows you to build up any combinations of the above. You can have as many of these text boxes as you like and they can be positioned anywhere in the frame or image surround.

I like to place a Caption text field in the lower right which changes as the individual images are viewed. See below

Making Lightrooms Print Module work with Leopard

Update (18th Nov 2007)

Lightroom 1.3 combined with the Apple Leopard 10.5.1 now fix the printing problems below.

Update (8th Nov 2007)

This Tip definitely works, and not just for me. See the post in the forum from member 'SHos'.
Note 'SHos' also recommends that you clear out your /Library/printers/ folder first prior to reseting print settings and applying the new Leopard printer driver.
Also the Lightroom file in \Library\Receipts and once I got rid of it, the install worked fine. The file was "Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.pkg".

Original Post

I have at last managed to get Lightrooms Print Module to again work under Leopard. Like many other Mac Leopard (the new MacOSX 10.5) users, I upgraded my system to Leopard and found that I could not select the Print Module. I received the error message below:

leopard_print_error
Lightroom Print Module Error

Here are the steps I took to get things working again. Note it requires that you have the latest Leopard version of your printer driver.

  • Uninstall Lightroom - make sure you uninstall everything, including preferences, user templates etc. Backup first so you can restore later.

  • Delete your print drivers and reset the printing system. This is done by opening the System preferences, selecting 'Print and Fax', delete the drivers then right click on the left hand Printers pane. This should bring up a menu where you can select Reset the Printing system

  • Download the latest Leopard drivers. In my case I have an Epson R1800. Link to the Epson site

  • Re Install Lightroom v1 from the Installation disk

  • Apply the the update 1.2 from the Adobe site

  • Re-install your Leopard Printer driver

  • Fire up Lightroom and check if it works

It worked for me and I am now printing again.

I hope it works for you ... let me know in the Image-Space Lightroom forum

Epson R1800 Leopard Drivers now Available

I am pleased to say that the latest drivers for the Epson R1800 printer are now available from the US Epson site.
After a very smooth upgrade to Leopard I found there were no drivers. All printing work stopped.

Now it's fixed and they are working fine.
